Kordes Roses
Kordes Rosen & Söhne was established in 1887 in Germany, initially as a trading company, but within the next generation a passion was birthed to breed “The Most Beautiful Roses in the World”. The family business is now schooling the 5th generation for leadership into the ever-changing industry.
In the 1980 and 90’s the new frontier of rose growing was established in Kenya and Kordes Rosen was at the forefront with their commanding variety assortment. The rapid expansion enabled by the climate, production cost and the ability to supply all year round brought diversity of product and more competition to the industry. In the early stages, Propagators were the agents for breeders, making plants and the contact point for growers.In 1999 Kordes Roses East Africa was registered as a satellite company in Kenya to meet the needs of the growers in direct relationships.
Next Generation
Kreative Roses
The next development came in 2006, Kordes Rosen started it’s own farm, Kreative Roses, a Kenyan registered company, it’s name is an anagram of Kordes Roses East Africa’ tive. Kreative was established to enable introduction of novelties into the marketplace through the Dutch auctions. The development of the rose growing business sped up the evolution of flower business not only from Kenya to East Africa to Sub Saharan Africa, but also changed the landscape in Europe in regard to growers.
In 2016 the Farm was sold as the industry moved from introduction of new varieties from breeders to their clients the growers. Inturn the raison d’etre of the farm came into question, and as a consequence was sold to one of the clients. The core function of the breeding remained, the testing and selection of new varieties. These practices continued and a portion of the old farm kept with new facilities developed to suit the purpose.
Not only the breeds but Kreative as an organization has had to keep up with the challenges of the marketplace. The quest for a more eco and social responsible industry has brought to the fore new technological advances that have been incorporated into the day to day business. These challenges will continued to be raised as Kreative and Kordes seek to breed the Most Beautiful Roses in the World
